BON PresenterPRESENTATION TO THE 52ND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF BROADCASTING ORGANISATIONS OF NIGERIA (BON) ON THE INTERNATIONAL NETWORK FOR TELEVISION AND RADIO (INTARA), FESTIVAL AND RADIO AND TELEVISION AWARDS ON WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28, 2010 BY VICTOR OKHAI FESTIVAL DIRECTOR.

The chairman BON, DG, Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Distinguished Chief Executives of all broadcast stations here present ladies and gentlemen.

Represented in this hall today is the largest network of broadcast organisations in any country in Africa. Indeed, it is probably more than half of the total broadcasters on the continent and they are transmitting to the biggest market on the continent and beyond.

When in 1959, Nigeria pioneered television and later coloured television on the continent, it was only the beginning of milestones in broadcasting to come. We have the largest TV network on the continent. We have the largest Radio network on the continent. The Nigerian audience is also the largest on the continent, but sadly in the area of quality content generated by the stations we are lagging behind.

This is not due to financial constraints, it is not due to lack of manpower, and it is not due to lack of ideas or capacity either. It is simply due to a lack of initiative on the part of producers and program managers who are capable but require other motivations, mainly personal, to make them take extra initiatives.

This motivation is not salaries and bonuses for I am sure every member here gives a generous dose of that. It is not promotion or salary increment. That is normal for anyone who works hard.

It is simply recognition! Recognition for excellence. Recognition for creativity! Recognition for extra hard work! Recognition by peers, among peers and before peers. No amount of money can equal that, for money will be earned and spent, but the winner of for instance, the radio producer of the year 2010 is etched in the sands of time and that award can open new vistas of opportunity for the winner and will remain a source of pride to the winner long after all else including his career is over.

Some of you here know what I am talking about. You have either as individuals or as a station received awards for excellence. What thrill! What excitement! What joy and what pride and inspiration it instilled on everyone associated with it!

What the INTARA platform is providing is an independent, impartial and credible reward system for excellence for radio and television broadcasters and practitioners.

The festival will showcase the best of programming from stations from as far as Abia to Zamfara. Unique programs we would not ordinarily know exist. This will afford opportunities for programme sales and exchanges.

There will be workshops, seminars and master classes to discuss and share knowledge on latest and emerging technology and techniques on the art and science of modern broadcasting with resource persons drawn from across the globe.

Doing an event like this without the involvement and endorsement of the stakeholders would be an exercise in futility. In the light of this therefore we have come to share this vision with members of this distinguished general assembly. The Delta State Government has already graciously agreed to host the maiden edition-taking place in then first week of December.

We need entries from all broadcast stations across the country for the various categories, which you will see with the entry form in the folder we have prepared for this presentation and which can also be downloaded from our website www.intara.org.

On our part we pledge to get the most credible jury from within and outside Nigeria including resources persons for the various aspects of the festival.

We also pledge to make the process transparent and open and welcome every suggestion and idea that will help us make this our very own EMMY.

It is our hope that this will motivate and inspire excellence and healthy competition among staff and between stations all striving towards excellence. Excellence that will be acknowledged and recognised. Excellence that will be rewarded. Excellence that will open new doors. Excellence that will motivate and inspire further excellence.

Thank you.
